Chapter 12 Little Forrest

Sue and I got off the bus at Savannah, then I went and got a cup of coffee and sat outside the bus station.

Sue e io scendemmo dall'autobus a Savannah, poi andai a prendere una tazza di caffè e mi sedetti fuori dalla stazione degli autobus.

I finished my cup of coffee and I took out my harmonica and began to play.

Terminai la mia tazza di caffè e tirai fuori la mia armonica e cominciai a suonare.

I played two songs ─ and a man walked past and threw some money into my empty coffee cup! I played two more songs, and soon the cup was half full of money!

Ho suonato due canzoni ─ e un uomo è passato e ha buttato un po' di soldi nella mia tazza di caffè vuota! Ho suonato altre due canzoni e presto la coppa era mezza piena di soldi!

By the end of the next week, we were getting ten dollars a day.

Entro la fine della settimana successiva ricevevamo dieci dollari al giorno.

One afternoon when I was playing to  some  people  in  the  park, I noticed that a little boy was watching me carefully.

Un pomeriggio, mentre stavo giocando con alcune persone al parco, ho notato che un bambino mi stava osservando attentamente.

Then I looked up and saw a woman who was standing near him.

Poi alzai gli occhi e vidi una donna che gli stava accanto.

It was Jenny Curran.

Era Jenny Curran.

Her hair was different, and she looked a bit older, and a bit tired, but it was her all right.

I suoi capelli erano diversi, e lei sembrava un po' più vecchia, e un po' stanca, ma era tutto a posto.

She was smiling. ‘Oh, Forrest, I knew it was you when I heard  that harmonica. Nobody plays the harmonica like you do.’

Stava sorridendo."Oh, Forrest, sapevo che eri tu quando ho sentito quell'armonica. Nessuno suona l'armonica come fai tu."

‘What are you doing here?’ I asked her.

"Che cosa stai facendo qui?" Le chiesi.

‘We live here now,’ she said. ‘Donald works in a business here in Savannah. We came here about three years ago.’

"Viviamo qui ora," disse. "Donald lavora in un'azienda qui a Savannah. Siamo venuti qui circa tre anni fa. "

When  I  stopped  playing,  the  rest  of  the  people   walked   away. Jenny sat next to me while the little boy started playing with Sue.

Quando smisi di suonare, il resto della gente si allontanò. Jenny si sedette accanto a me mentre il bambino iniziava a giocare con Sue.

‘Why are you playing your harmonica in the park?’ asked Jenny. ‘Mom wrote and told me about your shrimp business, and how rich you were.’

"Perché stai suonando la tua armonica nel parco?" Chiese Jenny. "La mamma mi ha scritto e mi ha parlato dei tuoi commerci di gamberetti e di quanto sei ricco."

‘It’s a long story,’ I said.

"È una lunga storia," dissi.

‘Is that your little boy?’

"È il tuo bambino?"

‘Yes,’ she said.

"Sì" disse lei.

 ‘What do you call him?’

"Come si chiama?"

‘His name is Forrest,’ she said quietly.

"Il suo nome è Forrest" Disse tranquillamente.

Then she went on, ‘He’s half yours. He’s your son, Forrest.’

Poi proseguì: "È metà tuo. È tuo figlio, Forrest."

I looked at the boy, who was still playing with Sue. ‘My . . . son?’

Ho guardato il ragazzo che stava ancora giocando con Sue. "Mio . . . figlio?"

‘I knew that a baby was on the way when I left Indianapolis,’ said Jenny, ‘but I didn’t want to say anything. I don’t know why. I was worried that perhaps ─’

"Sapevo che aspettavo un bambino quando ho lasciato Indianapolis" disse Jenny" ma non volevo dire niente. Non so perché. Ero preoccupata che forse ─ "

‘Perhaps he would be an idiot,’ I finished for her.

"Forse sarebbe stato un idiota" Ho finito per lei.

‘Yes. But Forrest, he’s not an idiot, he’s really clever.’

'Sì. Ma Forrest non è un idiota, è davvero intelligente."

‘Are you sure that he’s mine?’ I asked.

"Sei sicura che sia mio? "Chiesi.

‘I’m sure,’ said Jenny. ‘He wants to be a football player.’

"Ne sono sicura" disse Jenny. "Vuole diventare un giocatore di football."

I looked at the boy. ‘Can I see him for a minute or two?’

Guardai il ragazzo. "Posso vederlo per un minuto o due?"

‘Of course,’ said Jenny, and she called to him. ‘Forrest, I want you to meet another Forrest. He’s an old friend of mine.’

"Certo" disse Jenny, e lei lo chiamò. "Forrest, voglio che tu incontri un altro Forrest. È un mio vecchio amico."

The boy came and sat down.

Il ragazzo venne e si sedette.

‘What a funny animal you’ve got,’ he said.

"Che animale divertente che hai," disse.

‘He’s an ape,’ I said. ‘His name is Sue.’

"È una scimmia", dissi. "Si chiama Sue."

‘Why is it called Sue if it’s a he?’

"Perché si chiama Sue se è un lui?"

I knew then that I didn’t have an idiot for a son.

Ho capito allora che non avevo un idiota per figlio.

‘Your Mom tells me that you want to be a football player.’

"Tua madre mi dice che vuoi essere un giocatore di football."

‘Yes,’ he said. ‘Do you know anything about football?’

"Sì," disse. "Sai qualcosa del football?"

‘A bit,’ I said. ‘But ask your daddy. He’ll know more than me.’

"Un poco" ho detto. "Ma chiedi a tuo padre. Saprà più di me."

He put his arms round me for a second, then went off to play with Sue again.

Mi ha abbracciato per un secondo, poi è andato a giocare di nuovo con Sue.

Jenny looked at me. ‘How long have we been friends, Forrest? Thirty years? Sometimes it doesn’t seem true.’

Jenny mi ha guardato. "Da quanto siamo amici, Forrest? Trent'anni? A volte non sembra vero."

She moved nearer, and gave me a kiss. ‘Idiots,’ said Jenny. ‘Who isn’t an idiot?’

Si avvicinò e mi diede un bacio. "Idioti", disse Jenny. "Chi non è un idiota?"

Then she got up and held little Forrest’s hand, and they walked away.

Poi si alzò e prese la piccola mano di Forrest e se ne andarono.

After that, I did a few things. I phoned Mr Tribble and told him to give some of my money to my Mom, and some to Bubba’s daddy.

Dopo di ciò, feci alcune cose. Telefonai al signor Tribble e gli dissi di dare un po' del mio denaro a mia madre, e un po' al papà di Bubba.

‘Then send the rest to Jenny and little Forrest,’ I said.

"Poi manda il resto a Jenny e al piccolo Forrest" Dissi.

That night I sat up thinking.

Quella notte mi sono messo a pensare.

‘Perhaps I can put things right with Jenny,’ I thought, ‘now that I’ve found her again.’

"Forse posso sistemare le cose con Jenny," pensai, "ora che l'ho ritrovata."

But the more I thought about it, the more I understood that it was better for the boy to be with Jenny and her husband, and not to have an idiot  for a father.

Ma più ci pensavo, più ho capito che era meglio per il ragazzo stare con Jenny e suo marito e non avere un idiota per un padre.

An idiot? Yes, I’m an idiot. But most of the time I just try to do  the right thing.

Un idiota? Sì, sono un idiota. Ma la maggior parte delle volte cerco solo di fare la cosa giusta.

FORREST GUMP - Chapter 11

Chapter 11 The Shrimp Business

Well, I finally went home to Mobile again. The  train  got  into  Mobile station about three o’clock in the morning, and Sue and I got off.

Bene, finalmente tornai a casa a Mobile. Il treno arrivò alla stazione di Mobile verso le tre del mattino, e Sue e io scendemmo.

We walked into the town and found a place to sleep    in an empty building.

Uscimmo in città e trovammo un posto dove dormire in un edificio vuoto.

The next morning I bought some breakfast and got Sue some bananas to eat. Then we went to see Mom. She was pleased to see  me.

La mattina dopo comprai della colazione e presi a Sue delle banane da mangiare. Poi andammo a vedere la mamma. Fu felice di vedermi.

‘Oh, Forrest,’ she said, ‘you’re home at last!’ ‘Yes, Mom,’ I said.

"Oh, Forrest" esclamò, "finalmente sei a casa!» "Sì, mamma" dissi.

But I didn’t stay long.

Ma non rimasi a lungo.

Two days later, Sue and I got the bus to Bayou La Batre, where Bubba’s parents lived, and I explained to Bubba’s daddy about the shrimp business that Bubba and I planned   to start after we came out of the army.

Due giorni dopo, Sue e io prendemmo l'autobus per Bayou La Batre, dove vivevano i genitori di Bubba e io spiegai al papà di Bubba del commercio di gamberetti che io e Bubba avevamo intenzione di iniziare dopo le dimissioni dall'esercito.

He listened, and he was very interested. And the next day he took Sue and me out in his little boat, to look for a good place to start the shrimp business.

Lui ascoltò, ed era molto interessato. E il giorno dopo portò me e Sue nella sua piccola barca, per cercare un buon posto dove iniziare la pesca dei gamberetti.

It took almost a month to start things up ─ to get nets, and a boat, and everything.

Ci sono voluti quasi un mese per iniziare le cose ─ per avere le reti, una barca e tutto il resto.

Finally the day came when Sue and I were ready to go shrimping. And by that night we had hundreds and hundreds of shrimps in our nets!

Finalmente arrivò il giorno in cui Sue e io eravamo pronti per andare a gamberetti. E quella notte trovammo centinaia e centinaia di gamberetti nelle nostre reti!

It was the beginning of my shrimp business. We worked hard, all that summer, and that autumn and winter and the next spring.

Era l'inizio del mio commercio di gamberetti. Abbiamo lavorato sodo, tutta l'estate, quell'autunno, l'inverno e la primavera successiva.

And after a year, Mom was working for me, and Mr Tribble, and Curtis (my old football friend), and Bubba’s daddy.

E dopo un anno, la mamma lavorava per me e anche Mr Tribble, Curtis (il mio vecchio amico di football) e il papà di Bubba.

At the end of that year, we had thirty thousand dollars!

Alla fine di quell'anno avevamo trentamila dollari!

Everybody was very happy. But me! I always thought of Jenny, of course. I wanted to find her again.

Tutti erano molto felici. Tranne me! Pensavo sempre a Jenny, naturalmente. Volevo trovarla di nuovo.

And one day I dressed in my best clothes and got the bus to Mobile, and I went to Jenny’s Mom’s house.

E un giorno indossai i miei vestiti migliori e presi l'autobus per Mobile e andai a casa della mamma di Jenny.

‘Forrest Gump!’ she said, when she saw me. ‘Come on in!’  Well, we talked about Mom and the shrimp business and everything. Then I asked about Jenny.

"Forrest Gump!" Disse, quando mi vide. "Vieni dentro!" Bene, abbiamo parlato di mamma e del commercio di gamberetti e di ogni cosa. Poi chiesi di Jenny.

‘I don’t hear from her very often,’ she said. ‘I think they live somewhere in North Carolina now.’

"Non le sento spesso ", disse. "Penso che ora vivano da qualche parte nella Carolina del Nord."

‘They?’ I said.

"Loro?" Esclamai.

'Didn’t you know?’ she said. ‘Jenny married two years ago'

"Non lo sapevi?" Disse lei. "Jenny si è sposata due anni fa."

Why wasn’t I ready for that news? I don’t know, but I wasn’t.

Perché non ero pronto per quelle notizie? Non lo so, ma non lo ero.

And part of me seemed to die when I heard it. But Jenny only did what   she had to do. Because I’m an idiot. A lot of people say that they married an idiot, but they don’t know what it’s like to marry a real one. I cried that night, but it didn’t help.

E una parte di me sembrò morire quando l'ho udii. Ma Jenny aveva fatto solo quello che doveva fare. Perché sono un idiota. Molte persone dicono di aver sposato un'idiota, ma non sanno cosa vuol dire sposare un idiota vero. Piansi quella notte, ma non fu d'aiuto.

Time went on. I looked in the mirror and saw lines on my face and grey in my hair.

Il tempo passava. Mi sono guardato allo specchio e ho visto linee sul mio viso e grigio nei miei capelli.

The business was doing well, but I asked myself, ‘What are you doing all this for?’ And I knew that I had to get away.

Gli affari andavano bene, ma mi sono chiesto: "Per cosa stai facendo tutto questo?" E sapevo che dovevo andarmene.

Mr Tribble understood. ‘Why don’t you   tell everybody that you’re taking a long holiday, Forrest?’ he said. ‘The business will be here when you want it again.’

Mr Tribble aveva capito. "Perché non dici a tutti che stai per prenderti una lunga vacanza, Forrest?" Disse. "Il lavoro sarà qui quando lo vorrai di nuovo."

So I did. Sue came with me, and we went to the bus station.

Così ho fatto. Sue è venuta con me e siamo andati alla stazione degli autobus.

‘Where do you want to go?’ the woman in the ticket office asked. ‘I don’t know,’ I said.

"Dove vuoi andare?" Chiese la donna alla biglietteria. "Non lo so," ho detto.

‘Why don’t you go to Savannah?’ she said. ‘It’s a nice town.’

"Perché non vai a Savannah?" Disse. "È una bella città."

‘OK,’ I said.

"OK," Risposi.

FORREST GUMP - Chapter 10

Chapter 10 Money for Playing Games

I decided to go home to Mobile, but the bus stopped at Nashville on the way and I went into town for a drink and something to eat.

Decisi di andare a casa a Mobile, ma l'autobus si fermò lungo la strada a Nashville e andai in città per un drink e qualcosa da mangiare.

I was going past a hotel when I looked in the window and saw some people who were playing chess. Like I said before, Big Sam taught  me how to play chess when I was in the jungle. Well, I went into the hotel to watch them, but it was a  special chess tournament and it   cost five dollars to watch, so I didn’t go into the chess room.

Stavo passando davanti a un albergo quando guardai attraverso la vetrina e vidi alcune persone che giocavano a scacchi. Come ho detto prima, Big Sam mi aveva insegnato a giocare a scacchi quando ero nella giungla. Bene, andai in albergo per guardarli, ma era un torneo di scacchi speciale e costava cinque dollari per assistere, quindi non entrai nella stanza degli scacchi.

I was walking out when I saw a little old man who was playing chess with himself at a table near the door. I had another   hour before I had to catch the bus again, so I went across  and  watched him. Then I said, ‘If you make that move, you’ll lose your queen.’

Stavo uscendo quando vidi un ometto che giocava a scacchi da solo a un tavolo vicino alla porta. Avevo un'altra ora prima di dover prendere di nuovo l'autobus, così andai dall'altra parte a osservarlo. Allora dissi: "Se fai quella mossa, perderai la tua regina".

He didn’t look up but, after a minute, he said, ‘Perhaps you’re right.’

Non alzò gli occhi ma, dopo un minuto, disse: "Forse hai ragione."

It was time for me to get back to the bus station, but when I   started to leave, the old man said, ‘Why don’t you  sit  down and finish this game with me?’

Era giunto il momento per me di tornare alla stazione degli autobus, ma quando iniziai ad andarmene, il vecchio disse: "Perché non ti siedi e finisci questa partita con me?"

‘I can’t,’ I said. ‘I have to catch a bus.’

"Non posso," dissi. "Devo prendere un autobus."

So he waved at me with his hand, and I went back to the bus station.

Quindi mi salutò con la mano e io tornai alla stazione degli autobus.

But I missed the bus that evening, and there wasn’t another one until the next day. So I walked back to the hotel, and there was the little old man, still playing against himself. He looked up and saw   me, and told me to sit down.

Ma quella sera persi l'autobus e non ce n'era un altro fino al giorno successivo. Così tornai in albergo e c'era il vecchietto che giocava ancora contro se stesso. Alzò lo sguardo e mi vide, mi disse di sedermi.

It took me an hour to win that chess game. ‘Just who are you?’ he said after the game.

Mi ci è voluta un'ora per vincere quella partita a scacchi. 'Ma chi sei?', Disse dopo la partita.

‘Forrest Gump,’ I said.

"Forrest Gump," dissi.

‘Where did you learn to play chess?’ he asked.

"Dove hai imparato a giocare a scacchi?" Chiese.

‘In the jungle,’ I told him.

"Nella giungla", gli dissi.

He looked surprised. ‘Aren’t you in the tournament?’ he asked.

Sembrava sorpreso. "Non partecipi al torneo?" Chiese.

‘No,’ I told him. ‘I’m going home, and I’m going to start a shrimp business.’

"No", gli dissi. “Sto andando a casa, e ho intenzione di entrare nel commercio dei gamberetti.”

‘You can make a lot of money from chess,’ he said. ‘You’re very good.’

"Puoi guadagnare molti soldi dagli scacchi," disse. “Sei molto bravo.”

‘Am I?’ I said.

"Io?" Dissi.

The old man’s name was Mr Tribble. Two days later we were on our way to Los Angeles, to a big chess tournament.

Il vecchio si chiamava Mr Tribble. Due giorni dopo eravamo diretti a Los Angeles a un grande torneo di scacchi.

We were a day or two early for the  tournament, and  Mr  Tribble took me to see some people who were making a film.

Eravamo in anticipo per il torneo di un giorno o due e il signor Tribble mi portò a vedere alcune persone che stavano facendo un film.

We were watching a man who was crashing through a window in a film fight, when a man walked over to us.

Guardavamo un uomo che stava cadendo da una finestra in una rissa cinematografica, quando un uomo si avvicinò a noi.

‘Are you an actor?’ he asked me.

"Sei un attore?" Mi chiese.

‘Who, me?’ I said.

"Chi, io?" Dissi.

‘We’re here for the chess tournament,’ said Mr Tribble.

“Siamo qui per il torneo di scacchi” esclamò il signor Tribble.

But the other man was looking at me. ‘You are a big, strong man, aren’t you?’ he said. ‘You’re just what I need for a film that I’m making. My name is Felder.’

Ma l'altro uomo mi stava guardando. "Sei un uomo grande e forte, vero?" Disse. "Sei proprio quello di cui ho bisogno per un film che sto realizzando. Sono Felder.“

‘He has to play chess in a tournament tomorrow,’ said Mr Tribble. ‘He hasn’t got time to be an actor.’

"Deve giocare a scacchi in un torneo domani" disse il signor Tribble. "Non ha tempo per fare l'attore."

‘It won’t take long,’ said Mr Felder.

"Non ci vorrà molto" a affermò Felder.

So we went with Mr Felder, and I found myself acting in a film about the jungle ─ with Raquel Welch, the famous film star!

Così siamo andati con Mr Felder, e mi sono ritrovato a recitare in un film sulla giungla - con Raquel Welch, la famosa star del cinema!

‘Is that really Raquel Welch?’ I asked Mr Felder.

"È davvero Raquel Welch?» Chiesi al signor Felder.

Somehow, when I was helping Miss Welch to escape from the jungle, her dress came off and I had to run into the trees to hide her. But who do you think we met there? Sue, the ape! He was in another film!

In qualche modo, mentre stavo aiutando Miss Welch a fuggire dalla giungla, il suo vestito si strappò e dovetti correre tra gli alberi per nasconderla. Ma chi credi che abbia incontrato lì? Sue, lo scimmione! Era in un altro film!

The three of us ran out of there fast, and Miss Welch shouted and screamed.

Noi tre siamo corsi via di lì velocemente e la signorina Welch ha urlato e urlato.

I was pleased because I was back with Sue again.

Ero contento perché avevo trovato nuovamente Sue.

Back at our hotel, the three of us sat in our room and tried to decide what to do.

Di ritorno al nostro hotel, noi tre sedemmo nella nostra stanza per decidere cosa fare.

‘It’s going to be difficult travelling with an ape,’ said Mr Tribble.

"Sarà difficile viaggiare con una scimmia", disse il signor Tribble.

‘He won’t be any trouble, Mr Tribble,’ I said.

"Non avrà alcun problema, Mr Tribble," dissi.

But Mr Tribble seemed worried.

Ma il signor Tribble sembrava preoccupato.

Next day was the big chess tournament at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Il giorno dopo era il grande torneo di scacchi al Beverly Hills Hotel.

Mr Tribble and I got there early, and I had to play chess all day.

Il signor Tribble e io arrivammo presto e dovetti giocare a scacchi tutto il giorno.

It took me about seven minutes to win the first game, and half an hour to win the next. I played all that day, and the next. 

Mi ci sono voluti circa sette minuti per vincere la prima partita e mezz'ora per vincere la successiva. Ho giocato tutto quel giorno e il seguente.

And  suddenly I was in the final, playing with a Russian, Honest Ivan, the best player in the world. He was a big man, with long black hair, and he didn’t want to lose!

E improvvisamente fui in finale, dovevo giocare con un russo, Honest Ivan, il miglior giocatore del mondo. Era un uomo grosso, con lunghi capelli neri, e non voleva perdere!

It was a long game. Honest Ivan was good ─ very good. But just when Honest Ivan seemed to be winning, Sue ran across the room and jumped onto the chess table!

Fu una lunga partita. Honest Ivan era bravo - molto bravo. Ma proprio quando Honest Ivan sembrava dovesse vincere, Sue attraversò la stanza e saltò sul tavolo degli scacchi!

Honest Ivan fell off his chair, and everybody started screaming  and running everywhere. ‘Let’s get out of  here,  Forrest!’  shouted Mr Tribble.

Honest Ivan cadde dalla sedia e tutti iniziarono a urlare e correre dappertutto. «Andiamocene da qui, Forrest!» Gridò il signor Tribble.

We got back to the hotel and hurried up to our room.

Siamo tornati in albergo e siamo corsi in fretta nella nostra stanza.

‘Forrest,’ said Mr Tribble, ‘You’re a wonderful chess player, but I never know what’s going to happen next! Here’s half of the money that you’ve won ─ it’s almost five thousand dollars. Take Sue back   to Alabama with you, and start your shrimp business.’

"Forrest," disse Mr Tribble, "Sei un meraviglioso giocatore di scacchi, ma non so mai cosa succederà dopo! Ecco la metà dei soldi che hai vinto ─ sono quasi cinquemila dollari. Porta Sue in Alabama con te e inizia il tuo commercio di gamberetti."

He shook my hand and gave me his address. ‘Write to me sometimes, Forrest. Good luck!’

Mi strinse la mano e mi diede il suo indirizzo. "Scrivimi qualche volta, Forrest. In bocca al lupo!"
