Chapter 5 Danger in the Jungle

There was a little valley between two hills. We were on one hill and the enemy was on the other.

C'era una piccola valle tra due colline. Eravamo su una collina e il nemico era sull'altra.

Then we got orders to  move  the  machine gun about fifty metres to the left of the big tree that was in the middle of the valley, and to find a safe place to put it before the enemy blew us all up.

Poi abbiamo ricevuto l'ordine di spostare la mitragliatrice a circa cinquanta metri a sinistra del grande albero che si trovava nel mezzo della valle, e di trovare un posto sicuro dove metterla prima che il nemico ci facesse saltare in aria tutto.

We found a place to put the gun and stayed there all night. We could hear shooting all round us, but they didn’t hit us. When it was day again, our planes came, and they blew up the enemy soldiers. Then we watched while our men moved  off  the  hill  and  came  down into the valley.

Abbiamo trovato un posto dove mettere l'arma e ci siamo rimasti tutta la notte. Potevamo sentire gli spari intorno a noi, ma non ci hanno colpito. Quando fu di nuovo giorno, i nostri aerei arrivarono e fecero saltare in aria i soldati nemici. Poi abbiamo osservato i nostri uomini che si allontanavano dalla collina e scendevano nella valle.

Suddenly, somebody started shooting at them! We  couldn’t  see the enemy soldiers because the jungle was too thick, but somebody was shooting at our men.

All'improvviso, qualcuno ha iniziato a sparare contro di loro! Non potevamo vedere i soldati nemici perché la giungla era troppo folta, ma qualcuno sparava ai nostri uomini.

The shooting was in front of us, which meant that the enemy soldiers were in between us and our men. And this meant that the enemy was able to come back and find us, so we had to get out fast.

La sparatoria si svolgeva davanti a noi, il che significava che i soldati nemici erano tra noi e i nostri uomini. E questo significava che il nemico era in grado di tornare e trovarci, quindi abbiamo dovuto muoverci velocemente.

We began to move back to the hill, but Doyle suddenly saw more enemy soldiers who were going towards our men!

Cominciammo a tornare sulla collina, ma Doyle vide improvvisamente altri soldati nemici che stavano andando verso i nostri uomini!

We waited until they got to the top, then Bones  began  shooting  with the machine gun. He probably killed ten or fifteen enemy soldiers.

Abbiamo aspettato che arrivassero in cima, poi Bones ha iniziato a sparare con la mitragliatrice. Probabilmente ha ucciso dieci o quindici soldati nemici.

Doyle and I and the other two men threw grenades, but then an enemy soldier shot Bones in the head. I pulled the machine gun from his hands, and shouted to Doyle. There was no answer. Two of them were dead, and Doyle was only just alive.

Doyle e io e altri due lanciammo granate, ma poi un soldato nemico sparò a Bones in testa. Presi la mitragliatrice dalle sue mani e urlai a Doyle. Non ci fu risposta. Due di loro erano morti e Doyle era il solo vivo.

I picked up Doyle  and  put  him  across  my  shoulders,  then  I  ran towards the hill.

Ho preso Doyle e l'ho messo sulle mie spalle, poi sono corso verso la collina. 

There were bullets flying all round me from behind ─ and then I saw more enemy soldiers in the low grass in   front of me! They were shooting at our men on the hill.

C'erano proiettili che mi volavano tutt'intorno da dietro ─ e poi ho visto altri soldati nemici nell'erba bassa di fronte a me! Stavano sparando ai nostri uomini sulla collina.

I ran fast, shouting and screaming as loudly as I could. And suddenly I was in the middle of our soldiers, and everybody was pleased and hitting me on the back! My shouting and screaming frightened the enemy soldiers away!

Corsi veloce, urlando e gridando più forte che potevo. E improvvisamente ero nel mezzo dei nostri soldati, e tutti erano contenti e mi stavano battendo sulle spalle! Le mie urla e le mie grida avevano spaventato i soldati nemici!

The weeks went past slowly. I got a letter from my Mom, and  I   wrote back to her that everything was OK. I also wrote a letter to Jenny Curran and asked Mom to ask  her parents  to send  it  on  to her. But I didn’t get a reply.

Le settimane passavano lentamente. Ho ricevuto una lettera da mia madre e le ho scritto che tutto andava bene. Scrissi anche una lettera a Jenny Curran e chiesi alla mamma di domandare ai suoi genitori di inviarla a lei. Ma non ricevetti risposta.

Bubba and I decided that we would get a boat when we   got home again, and catch shrimps, and make a lot of money.

Bubba e io decidemmo, una volta tornati a casa di comprare una barca, prendere gamberetti e guadagnare un sacco di soldi.

But we still had to look for enemy soldiers ─ and one day we found   them. We were crossing a rice field when suddenly they started shooting at us. Somebody shouted, ‘Back!’ I picked up my machine gun and ran towards some trees.

Ma dovevamo ancora cercare i soldati nemici ─ e un giorno li abbiamo trovati. Stavamo attraversando un campo di riso quando improvvisamente hanno iniziato a spararci contro. Qualcuno ha gridato: "Indietro!" Ho preso la mitragliatrice e sono corso verso alcuni alberi.

I looked round for Bubba, but he wasn’t there. Then I heard that  he was out in the rice field, and he was hurt, so I left my gun by the trees and ran back into the field.

Ho guardato in giro per vedere Bubba, ma lui non era lì. Poi ho capito che era nel campo di riso, e si era fatto male, così ho lasciato la mia mitragliatrice vicino agli alberi e sono tornato di corsa nel campo.

‘Gump! You can’t go out there!’ somebody shouted. But I just ran. Halfway out, I saw another man who was hurt. He was holding a hand up to me ─ so I picked him up and ran back to the trees with him. Then I ran out again and found Bubba.

“Gump! Non puoi andare là fuori!" Gridò qualcuno. Ma stavo già correndo. A metà strada, ho visto un altro uomo che era stato ferito. Mi stava tendendo una mano - così l'ho preso e sono scappato di corsa verso gli alberi con lui. Poi sono corso di nuovo fuori e ho trovato Bubba.

There was  blood  all  over him and he had two bullets in his stomach. He looked up at me, and said, ‘Forrest, why did this happen?’ What could I say? Then he said, ‘Play me a song on the harmonica, will you?’

C'era sangue dappertutto e aveva due pallottole nel suo stomaco. Guardò verso di me e disse: "Forrest, perché è successo?" Cosa potevo dire? Poi ha detto: "Suonami una canzone con l'armonica, vuoi?"

There was still a lot of shooting going on, but I played a song. Then all the colour went out of Bubba’s face and he said something very softly: ‘Home.’ And then he died.

C'erano ancora molti combattimenti in corso, ma ho suonato una canzone. Poi Bubba impallidì e disse qualcosa molto piano: "Casa". E poi morì.

And that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

E questo è tutto ciò che ho da dire al riguardo.

The rest of the night was terrible. The worst night that I’ve ever known.

Il resto della notte è stato terribile. La notte peggiore che abbia mai conosciuto.

Nobody could get any help to us, and the enemy soldiers   were so near that we could hear them talking.

Nessuno poteva aiutarci e i soldati nemici erano così vicini che li sentivamo parlare.

Then, when it got    light, an American plane came  and  used  fire-throwers  on  the  enemy ─ and almost on us! Suddenly the trees were on fire, and     men were  running  out  of  the  jungle  with  burned  skin  and  clothes.

Poi, quando è diventato chiaro, è arrivato un aereo americano che ha usato i lanciafiamme sul nemico ─ e quasi contro di noi! All'improvviso gli alberi erano in fiamme, e gli uomini stavano correndo fuori dalla giungla con vestiti e pelle bruciata.

During all of this, somebody shot me in the back of the leg, but      I can’t remember when it happened. It didn’t matter. Nothing mattered. Bubba was dead, the shrimp business idea was dead with him. I just wanted to die, too.

Durante tutto questo, qualcuno mi ha sparato alla parte posteriore della gamba, ma non riesco a ricordare quando è successo. Non importava. Niente importava. Bubba era morto, l'idea di gamberetti era morta con lui. Volevo solo morire anch'io.

Then our helicopters came, and the  enemy  soldiers  who  were left ran away. An hour later, I was out of there and on my way to the hospital in Danang.

Poi arrivarono i nostri elicotteri e i soldati nemici rimasti andarono via. Un'ora dopo ero fuori di lì e andavo all'ospedale di Danang.
