SUMMER SKY (2)

HOW TO FIND  THE NORTH WITH THE SUN OR MOON
Which way is north? If you have a compass, you find easily North. Don't have a compass? Relax. If you follow these simple steps, you're quite likely to find the North.

DAY - METHOD 1

Place a stick upright in the ground so that you can see its shadow. Alternatively, you can use the shadow of a fixed object. Nearly any object will work, but the taller the object is, the easier it will be to see the movement of its shadow, and the narrower the tip of the object is, the more accurate the reading will be. Make sure the shadow is cast on a level, brush-free spot.

Mark the tip of the shadow with a small object, such as a pebble, or a distinct scratch in the ground. Try to make the mark as small as possible so as to pinpoint the shadow's tip, but make sure you can identify the mark later.

Wait 10-15 minutes.
Aspettate 10-15 minuti.

The shadow tip will move from west to east in a curved line.

Mark the new position of the shadow's tip with another small object. It will likely move only a short distance.

Draw a straight line in the ground between the two marks.
This is an approximate east-west line
Questa è approssimativamente una linea est-ovest.

Stand with the first mark (west) on your left, and the other (east) on your right. You are now facing mostly toward true north.

DAY - METHOD 2
Find an analog watch that is set accurately. Place it on a level surface, such as the ground, or hold it horizontal in your hand.

Point the hour hand at the sun.

Bisect (that is, find the centre point of) the angle between the hour hand and the twelve o'clock mark (the number 12 on the watch). The centre of the angle between the hour hand and twelve o'clock mark is the north-south line. If your watch is set to daylight saving time bisect the angle between the hour hand and the one o'clock mark instead.

DAY - METHOD 3
Find north based on the direction of the sun. Remember that the sun rises in east and sets in west.
If the sun is in the east (early in the morning), the north will be roughly a quarter turn counterclockwise (for instance, if you're facing the sun, you would turn to the left). If the sun is in the west, the north will be roughly a quarter turn clockwise.

NIGHT - METHOD 1

Drive a stick into the ground until the tip of it is at your eye level.

Plant a taller stick in front it so that the tips of the sticks line up on a bright star when you look at them.

Wait, until, after a few minutes, the star will appear to have moved (the Earth is moving, not the star) and determine which way the star moved.

If it moved left, you are facing north.

If it moved up, you are facing east.

If it moved down, you are facing west.

If it moved right, you are facing south.

NIGHT - METHOD 2

FULL MOON
Point the hour hand at full Moon.

FIRST QUARTER
Point the hour hand at first quarter Moon.
Bisect (that is, find the centre point of) the angle between the hour hand and the twelve o'clock mark (the number 12 on the watch). The centre of the angle between the hour hand and twelve o'clock mark is the west-east line. Rotating 90° clockwise (3 hours after that marks the West) you get the direction of the north.

An easy rule to remember is this old navigation trick.
 LAST QUARTER

Point the hour hand at last quarter Moon.
Bisect (that is, find the centre point of) the angle between the hour hand and the twelve o'clock mark (the number 12 on the watch). The centre of the angle between the hour hand and twelve o'clock mark is the east-west line. Rotating 90° counterclockwise (3 hours before the one that marks the East) you get the direction of the north.

This is old trick.
Questo è un vecchio trucco.
WAXING CRESCENT
If the moon is in a crescent phase simply draw an imaginary line through the tips of its "horns" down to the horizon. The point where it touches is roughly South for the northern hemisphere.

SUMMER SKY (1)

… and saw again the stars.
… e quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.
(Dante Alighieri - The Divine Comedy, Inferno XXXIV)

Skywatchers are fascinated by the star-studded canopy which seems to stretch overhead.

To observers it seems as if Earth is at the center of a giant star-studded "celestial sphere," which reinforced the belief, held for thousands of years, that we are at the center of the universe.

Of course, we know well that the stars are notattached inside a huge hollow sphere. It is the Earth which rotates around its axis, while the stars are so distant that they seem to stand still. The final effect, however, is the same in both cases.

If you watch stars throughout the night, you will see that most of them also rise to the east of you and set west of you, like the Sun and Moon. Indeed, the entire celestial sphere seems to rotate slowly: one turn in 24 hours

We of course know that it is not the universe that rotates around us from east to west, but our Earth is the one rotating, (from west to east). It is still convenient to talk about "the rotation of the celestial sphere." That could also make the sky rotate the way it is observed to do.

Most stars keep fixed positions relative to each other. The eye naturally groups them into patterns or constellations ("stella" is Latin for star), to which each culture has given its own names. The names we use come from the ancient Greeks and the Romans: Orion the hunter, Scorpio the scorpion, Leo the lion, Cygnus the swan, Ursa Major the Big Bear (better known as the "big dipper") and so forth.

At any time, only half the sphere is visible. Because of that, only one pole is seen at any time, and for most of us, living north of the equator, that is the North Pole.
