WHAT'S THE GENDER OF THE COMPUTER?



A language instructor was explaining to her class that in Italian, nouns unlike their English counterparts, are grammatically designated as masculine or feminine. "House" in Italian, is feminine - "la casa." "Garden" in Italian, is masculine - "il giardino."
Un'insegnante di lingua stava spiegando alla sua classe che in italiano i sostantivi, a differenza dei loro omologhi inglesi, sono grammaticalmente designati come maschile o femminile. "Casa" in italiano, è femminile - " la casa".  "Giardino", in italiano, è maschile - "il giardino".

One puzzled student asked, "What gender is computer?" The teacher did not know. So for fun she split the class into two groups by gender, and asked them to decide whether "computer" should be a masculine or feminine noun.
Uno studente perplesso chiese: "Di che sesso è computer?" L'insegnante non lo sapeva. Così, per divertimento divise la classe in due gruppi in base al sesso e chiese loro di decidere se "computer" avrebbe dovuto essere un sostantivo maschile o femminile.

Both groups were required to give four reasons for their recommendation.
Entrambi i gruppi erano tenuti a dare per la loro proposta quattro motivazioni.
