Chapter 9 A Real Idiot

Of course, the first thing that I wanted to do when I got back to America was find Jenny. So I phoned Moses in Boston.

Naturalmente, la prima cosa che volli fare quando tornai in America fu trovare Jenny. Così telefonai a Moses a Boston.

‘The Broken Eggs group has broken up,’ he told me. ‘I  don’t know what happened to Jenny. I heard that she went to Chicago,      but that was five years ago.’

"Il gruppo Broken Eggs si è sciolto" mi disse. "Non so cosa sia successo a Jenny. Ho sentito che è andata a Chicago, ma è stato cinque anni fa."

‘Do you have a telephone number, or anything?’ I asked.

"Hai un numero di telefono o altro?" Chiesi.

‘It’s an old number,’ he said, ‘but perhaps she’s still there.’

"È un vecchio numero», disse, «ma forse è ancora lì."

I phoned the number, and she wasn’t.

Chiamai il numero e lei non c'era.

‘Jenny Curran?’ a man’s voice said. ‘She went to Indianapolis. Got a job at the Temperer factory.’

"Jenny Curran?" Disse una voce maschile. "È andata a Indianapolis. Ha ottenuto un lavoro alla fabbrica di Temperer."

So I went to Indianapolis on the bus.

The Temperer factory was outside the town. I asked about Jenny at  the office, and the woman said, ‘Yes, she works in here. Why don’t you wait at the side of the factory? It’s almost lunch-time, and she’ll probably come out.’ So I did.

A lot of people came out at lunch-time. Then Jenny came out.  She went and sat under a tree on the grass, and began eating an apple. I went up behind her and said, ‘That looks like a nice apple.’ She didn’t look up. She just said, ‘Forrest, it has to be you.’

Un sacco di persone uscì all'ora di pranzo. Poi uscì Jenny. Andò a sedersi sotto un albero sull'erba e cominciò a mangiare una mela. Mi avvicinai alle sue spalle e dissi: "Sembra una bella mela." Non alzò lo sguardo. Disse appena: "Forrest, devi essere tu".

A minute later, I had my arms round her and we  were  both  crying.

People were watching us with strange looks, but it didn’t matter. Jenny and me were together again.

Le persone ci guardavano con strane occhiate, ma non importava. Jenny e io eravamo di nuovo insieme.

‘I finish work in three hours, Forrest,’ Jenny said. ‘Why don’t you wait for me in that bar across the street? Then I’ll take you to my place.’

"Finisco di lavorare tra tre ore, Forrest," disse Jenny. "Perché non mi aspetti in quel bar dall'altra parte della strada? Poi ti porterò a casa mia. "

So I waited in the bar.

And I got into the wrestling business. How? I’ll tell you.

It started when I arm-wrestled a man in the bar, and won some money on a bet. That gave me an idea. But at first I didn’t say anything to Jenny.

Tutto è iniziato quando ho fatto a braccio di ferro con un uomo al bar e ho vinto un po' di soldi per una scommessa. Questo mi ha dato un'idea. Ma all'inizio non ho detto niente a Jenny.

She came across to the bar after work, and we had a drink and talked.

‘I saw you on TV when you went up into space, Forrest,’ she said.

"Ti ho visto in TV quando sei andato nello spazio, Forrest," disse.

And I told her all about that, and about Sue, the ape. ‘What happened to him?’ she asked.

‘I don’t know,’ I said. ‘But he was a good friend.’

"Non lo so," ho detto. "Ma è stato un buon amico."

Later, we went back to Jenny’s flat, and she said, ‘You can stay here.’

Più tardi, tornammo nell'appartamento di Jenny e lei disse: "Puoi restare qui".

Next day, when Jenny went to work, I went back to the bar. Several people wanted to try arm-wrestling with me  again,  and  I said OK. None of them won because I was too strong, but plenty of people wanted to try their luck.

Il giorno dopo, quando Jenny andò a lavorare, tornai al bar. Diverse persone volevano provare di nuovo a lottare con me, e dissi OK. Nessuno di loro vinse perché ero troppo forte, ma molte persone volevano tentare la fortuna.

After about a month, I was winning nearly two hundred dollars a week, arm-wrestling. Then one day a man called Mike came into the bar.

Dopo circa un mese stavo vincendo quasi duecento dollari alla settimana, a braccio di ferro. Poi un giorno un uomo chiamato Mike entrò nel bar.

‘You can make a lot more money,’ he told me.

"Puoi guadagnare molti più soldi" Mi disse.

‘How?’ I asked.

"Come?" Ho chiesto.

‘Wrestling. Real wrestling,’ he said. ‘I can teach you.’

"Wrestling. Il vero wrestling" disse. "Posso insegnarti."

To make a long story short, he did.

Per farla breve, lo fece.

Jenny wasn’t happy about the wrestling but I won a lot of money  sometimes by winning fights, sometimes by losing them because Mike told me to lose them. Yes, that happens, too.

Jenny non era contenta del wrestling, ma ho vinto molti soldi a volte vincendo combattimenti, a volte perdendoli perché Mike mi ha detto di perderli. Sì, succede anche quello.

But then I did something stupid again. I bet on myself winning a fight, after Mike told me to lose it.

Ma poi feci di nuovo qualcosa di stupido. Ho scommesso che avrei vinto un incontro, dopo che Mike mi aveva detto di perderlo.

Jenny got really angry. ‘It isn’t honest,’ she said.

Jenny si è davvero arrabbiata. "Non è onesto," disse.

I didn’t listen. I bet all my money on myself to win and then I lost the fight.

Non le ho dato ascolto. Ho scommesso tutti i miei soldi che avrei vinto e poi ho perso il combattimento.

But there was worse to come. When I got back to the flat, Jenny was gone, and there was a letter waiting for me. It said:

Ma il peggio doveva ancora venire. Quando tornai in casa, Jenny era sparita e c'era una lettera che mi aspettava. Diceva:

Dear Forrest

Caro Forrest

You’re doing something bad tonight. It isn’t honest, and I cannot go on with you like this.

Stai facendo qualcosa di male stasera. Non è onesto e non posso andare avanti con te in questo modo.

I think about having a house and a family and things like that now. I watched you grow up big and strong and good.

Penso ad avere una casa, una famiglia e cose del genere ora. Ti ho visto crescere grande, forte e buono.

And then, in Boston, I realized that I loved you, and I was the happiest girl in the world. But then there was that girl outside the Hodaddy Club.

E poi, a Boston, ho capito che ti amavo e che ero la ragazza più felice del mondo. Ma poi ci fu quella ragazza fuori dall'Hodaddy Club.

Then you went up into space and I lost you for four years, and I think you changed.

Poi sei andato nello spazio e ti ho perso per quattro anni, e penso che tu sia cambiato.

And I think perhaps I changed, too. I just want to live in an ordinary way now. So, I must go and find it.

E penso che forse sono cambiata anch'io. Voglio solo vivere in un modo normale ora. Quindi, devo andare a trovarlo.

I am crying while I write this, but please don’t try to find me. Goodbye, my dear.

FORREST GUMP - Chapter 8

Chapter 8 Into Space

Spring and summer went by, and I continued to play my harmonica with the group. It was my happiest time of all. But ─ you’ve guessed  it ─ something went wrong.

Passarono la primavera e l'estate, e continuai a suonare la mia armonica con il gruppo. È stato il mio periodo più felice di tutti. Ma ─ l'hai indovinato ─ qualcosa andò storto.

How did it happen? I don’t know. But one night I was sitting outside the Hodaddy Club, smoking a cigarette, when a girl smiled and came up to me.

Com'è successo? Non lo so. Ma una notte ero seduto fuori dall'Hodaddy Club, fumando una sigaretta, quando una ragazza sorrise e mi si avvicinò.

She sat down across my legs and put her arms round me. She was laughing and kissing me, and I didn’t know what to do.

Si sedette sulle mie gambe e mi abbracciò. Stava ridendo e baciandomi, e non sapevo cosa fare.

Suddenly, the door opened behind me, and there was Jenny. ‘Forrest, it’s time to’

All'improvviso, la porta si aprì dietro di me, e c'era Jenny. 'Forrest, è tempo di…"

She stopped when she saw me with the girl. Then she said, ‘Oh, no! Not you, too!’

Si fermò quando mi vide con la ragazza. Poi disse: "Oh, no! Non anche tu!'

I jumped up and pushed the girl away. ‘Jenny!’ I said.

Sono saltato su e ho allontanato la ragazza. "Jenny!" Ho detto.

‘Stay away from me, Forrest!’ she said. ‘You men are all the same! Just stay away from me!’

"Stai lontano da me, Forrest!" Disse lei. "Voi uomini siete tutti uguali! Stai lontano da me!"

She didn’t speak to me again that night. And the next morning   she told me to find another place to live.

Non mi ha più parlato quella notte. E la mattina dopo mi ha detto di trovare un altro posto in cui vivere.

I went to live with Moses, one of the other men in the group, and soon after that Jenny went to Washington to talk and work against   the war.

Andai a vivere con Moses, uno degli altri uomini del gruppo, e poco dopo Jenny andò a Washington per parlare e lavorare contro la guerra.

Moses wrote down the address for me.

Moses mi ha scritto l'indirizzo.

So I went back to Washington.

Quindi sono tornato a Washington.

There was a lot of trouble there. Police were everywhere, and people were shouting and throwing things.

C'erano molti problemi lì. La polizia era ovunque e le persone gridavano e lanciavano cose.

And the police were taking some of them away.

E la polizia stava portando via alcune di loro.

I went to find Jenny’s address, but there was nobody at home. I waited outside for most of the day. Then, at about nine o’clock, a car stopped near the house and some people got out. And there she was!

Sono andato all'indirizzo di Jenny, ma non c'era nessuno in casa. Ho aspettato fuori per gran parte della giornata. Poi, verso le nove, una macchina si è fermata vicino alla casa e alcune persone sono scese. Ed eccola lì!

I started to walk towards her, but she turned and walked away.  The other people ─ two men and a girl ─ didn’t know what to say.

Ho iniziato a camminare verso di lei, ma lei si è girata e si è allontanata. Le altre persone - due uomini e una ragazza - non sapevano cosa dire.

‘What’s wrong with her?’ I asked one of the two men.

"Cosa c'è che non va in lei?" Chiesi a uno dei due uomini.

‘She just got out of prison,’ he said. ‘She was there all  night before we could get her out.’

"È appena uscita di prigione", disse. "È stata lì tutta la notte prima che potessimo tirarla fuori."

Jenny was in the back of the car, so I went over and talked to her through the window.

Jenny era sul sedile posteriore dell'auto, quindi andai a parlarle attraverso il finestrino.

I told her how I felt ─ I was sorry about the girl, and I didn’t want to play in the group without her. She listened quietly, then opened the car door for me to get in, and we    sat and talked.

Le ho detto come mi sentivo ─ Mi dispiaceva per la ragazza, e non volevo suonare nel gruppo senza di lei. Ascoltò piano, poi aprì la portiera dell'auto per farmi entrare e ci sedemmo e parlammo.

The others were talking about something that would happen the next day. Some American soldiers planned to take off their Vietnam medals and throw them away in front of the crowds of people. Suddenly Jenny said, ‘Did you know that Forrest won a medal?’

Gli altri stavano parlando di qualcosa che sarebbe accaduto il giorno dopo. Alcuni soldati americani avevano pianificato di togliersi le medaglie ricevute in Vietnam e gettarle via di fronte alla folla di persone. All'improvviso Jenny disse: "Sapevate che Forrest ha vinto una medaglia?"

The others went quiet and looked at me, then looked at Jenny.

Gli altri si zittirono e mi guardarono, poi guardarono Jenny.

Next morning, Jenny came into the living-room. I was sleeping on   the floor of their house. She woke me up.

La mattina dopo, Jenny entrò nel soggiorno. Stavo dormendo sul pavimento della loro casa. Mi svegliò.

‘Forrest,’ she said. ‘I want you to do something for me.’

"Forrest," disse lei. "Voglio che tu faccia qualcosa per me.

‘What?’ I said.

"Cosa?" Dissi.

'I want you to come with us today, and I want you to wear your army clothes.’

"Voglio che tu venga con noi oggi, e voglio che tu indossi i tuoi vestiti dell'esercito."

‘Why?’ I asked.

"Perché?" Ho chiesto.

‘Because you’re going to do something to stop all the killing in Vietnam.’

"Perché stai per fare qualcosa per fermare tutte le uccisioni in Vietnam."

You can guess what I had to do, can’t you? I had to throw away  my medal with the other American soldiers. But because my medal was a more famous medal than theirs, it was more  important  to  Jenny and her friends.

Puoi indovinare cosa dovevo fare, vero? Dovevo buttare via la mia medaglia con gli altri soldati americani. Ma poiché la mia medaglia era una medaglia di maggior valore della loro, era più importante per Jenny e i suoi amici.

Oh, I threw my medal away, OK ─ but it hit somebody really important! One of the President’s men! So they threw me into prison.

Oh, ho buttato via la medaglia, OK ─ ma ha colpito qualcuno davvero importante! Uno degli uomini del presidente! Così mi hanno messo in prigione.

Why do things like that always happen to me?

Perché cose del genere succedono sempre a me?

I didn’t stay in prison long, because they soon real- ized that I was an idiot, and they put me in a special hospital for idiots.

Non sono rimasto in prigione a lungo, perché presto si sono resi conto che ero un idiota e mi hanno messo in un ospedale speciale per idioti.

It was the doctors at the hospital who decided  to  send  me  to  NASA ─ that’s the space centre at Houston, in Texas.

Sono stati i medici dell'ospedale che hanno deciso di mandarmi alla NASA ─ questo è il centro spaziale di Houston in Texas.

‘You’re just the kind of person that they’re looking for!’ the doctors told me.

"Sei il tipo giusto di persona che stanno cercando!" Mi dissero i dottori.

I soon understood why! NASA sent me on a journey into space with an ape! Me, a spaceman!

Ho capito presto perché! La NASA mi ha mandato in un viaggio nello spazio con uno scimmione! Io, un astronauta!

All kinds of things went wrong because of that ape. Instead of coming down in the sea when we returned, the space ship came down in the jungle somewhere, and it was four years before the NASA people found us!

Tutte le cose sono andate male a causa di quella scimmia. Invece di scendere in mare, quando siamo tornati, la nave spaziale è scesa da qualche parte nella giungla e sono passati quattro anni prima che la NASA ci trovasse!

But the ape and I were soon good friends.  His name was Sue (yes, I know it’s a girl’s name, but they sent a male ape up by mistake, and NASA didn’t like to tell the news- papers that). And it was in the jungle that I met Big Sam ─ a man who taught me to  play chess. And that was important, as you will see later.

Ma io e la scimmia siamo diventati presto buoni amici. Il suo nome era Sue (sì, so che è il nome di una ragazza, ma hanno mandato uno scimmione maschio per sbaglio, e alla NASA non piaceva farlo sapere ai giornali). Ed è stato nella giungla che ho incontrato Big Sam - un uomo che mi ha insegnato a giocare a scacchi. E quello fu importante, come vedrai in seguito.

FORREST GUMP - Chapter 7

Chapter 7 Meeting Jenny Again

Soon after that, I heard that I was leaving the army early, and they gave me some money for a train ticket to go home.

Poco dopo mi hanno congedato dall’esercito e mi hanno dato del denaro per il biglietto del treno per tornare a casa.

But all this time, I was thinking about Jenny Curran.

Ma per tutto questo tempo, ho pensato a Jenny Curran.

Just before I left the hospital in Danang, I had a letter from her.

Poco prima di lasciare l'ospedale di Danang, avevo ricevuto una sua lettera.

She was now playing in a group called The Broken Eggs, and they played two nights each week at a place called the Hodaddy Club near Harvard University.

Suonava in un gruppo chiamato The Broken Eggs e suonavano due sere ogni settimana in un posto chiamato Hodaddy Club vicino all'università di Harvard.

Now that I was free from the army, I just wanted to go  and see her. So I got a ticket for Boston, instead of Mobile.

Ora che ero libero dall'esercito, volevo solo andare a vederla. Quindi ho preso un biglietto per Boston, invece che per Mobile.

I tried to walk to the Hodaddy Club from the train station, but I  lost my way, so I took a taxi.

Ho provato a raggiungere l'Hodaddy Club dalla stazione ferroviaria, ma ho perso la strada, quindi ho preso un taxi.

It was in the afternoon, and the man behind the bar said, Jenny’ll be here about nine o’clock.’

Era il pomeriggio, e l'uomo dietro al bar disse: Jenny sarà qui verso le nove.

‘Can I wait?’ I asked. ‘OK,’ he said.

"Posso aspettare?" Ho chiesto. "OK", disse.

So I sat down and waited for five or six hours.

Così mi sono seduto e ho aspettato per cinque o sei ore.

Students began to come in, most of  them  wearing  dirty  jeans. The men had beards, and the women had long, untidy hair.

Gli studenti cominciarono a entrare, la maggior parte indossava jeans sporchi. Gli uomini avevano la barba e le donne avevano i capelli lunghi e disordinati.

Later, the group ─ The Broken Eggs ─ arrived, but  I  didn’t  see Jenny. Then they began to play ─ and they were loud. The music sounded like a plane that was taking off! But the students loved it.

Più tardi è arrivato il gruppo The Broken Eggs, ma non ho visto Jenny. Poi hanno iniziato a suonare ─ ed erano rumorosi. La musica sembrava un aereo che stava decollando! Ma gli studenti la adoravano.

And then Jenny came on!

E poi è arrivata Jenny!

She was different. Her hair was all the way down her back, and  she was wearing sun-glasses ─ at night! She was wearing blue jeans and a shirt with lots of colours on it. The  group  started  playing  again and Jenny began to sing.

Lei era diversa. Aveva i capelli lunghi fino alle spalle, e portava gli occhiali da sole ─ di notte! Indossava blue jeans e una maglietta con molti colori. Il gruppo ha iniziato a suonare di nuovo e Jenny ha iniziato a cantare.

Later, I went outside and walked round for about half an hour, then went back.

Più tardi sono uscito e sono andato in giro per circa mezz'ora, poi sono tornato indietro.

There were a lot of people waiting to go in, so I sat on the ground. I had my harmonica in my pocket, so I took it out and started to play.

C'erano molte persone in attesa di entrare, quindi mi sono seduto a terra. Avevo la mia armonica in tasca, allora l'ho presa e ho iniziato a suonare.

I could hear the music that was playing inside and, after a minute or two, I began playing with it. Suddenly, a door behind me opened and there was Jenny!

Potevo sentire la musica che suonava all'interno e, dopo un minuto o due, ho iniziato a giocarci. All'improvviso, una porta dietro di me si aprì e c'era Jenny!

‘Who is that playing the harmonica?’ she said. And then she saw me. ‘Forrest Gump!’ And she ran out of the door and threw her arms round me.

"Chi suona l'armonica?" Ha detto. E poi mi ha visto. "Forrest Gump!" E lei è corsa fuori dalla porta e mi ha gettato le braccia al collo.

We talked together until it was time for her to sing again.

Abbiamo parlato fino a quando è arrivato il momento per lei di cantare di nuovo.

‘I didn’t leave school,’ said Jenny. ‘They threw me out after they found a boy in my room one night. I went to California and stayed there for some time.’ "Non ho lasciato la scuola", disse Jenny. "Mi hanno mandato via dopo aver trovato un ragazzo nella mia stanza una notte. Sono andata in California e sono rimasta lì per un po'."

She laughed.

Rise.

‘I wore flowers in my hair, and talked about love. But the people that I was with were strange. Then I met a man, and we came to Boston. But he was dangerous. He was against the war, like me, but he blew up buildings and things. I couldn’t stay with him. Next, I met a teacher from Harvard University, but he was married. Then I began to sing with The Broken Eggs.’

"Indossavo fiori nei miei capelli e parlavo d'amore. Ma le persone con cui ero erano strane. Poi ho incontrato un uomo e siamo venuti a Boston. Ma era pericoloso. Era contro la guerra, come me, ma ha fatto saltare in aria edifici e cose. Non potevo stare con lui. Successivamente, ho incontrato un insegnante dell'Università di Harvard, ma lui era sposato. Poi ho iniziato a cantare con The Broken Eggs."

‘Where do you live?’ I asked.

"Dove vivi?" Chiesi.

‘With my boyfriend,’ she said. ‘He’s a student. You can come  back and stay with us tonight.’

"Con il mio ragazzo", disse. 'Lui è uno studente. Puoi venire e stare con noi stanotte."

The boyfriend’s name was Rudolph. He was a little man, and he was sitting on the floor with his eyes shut when we got to Jenny’s flat.

Il ragazzo si chiamava Rudolph. Era un ometto ed era seduto sul pavimento con gli occhi chiusi quando arrivammo all'appartamento di Jenny.

‘Rudolph, this is Forrest,’ Jenny said. ‘He’s a friend of mine, and he’s going to stay with us for a few days.’

"Rudolph, questo è Forrest," disse Jenny. "È un mio amico e resterà con noi per qualche giorno."

Rudolph didn’t speak or open his eyes, but he put up his hand and smiled.

Rudolph non parlò né aprì gli occhi, ma alzò la mano e sorrise.

Next morning, when I got up, Rudolph was still sitting on the  floor with his eyes shut.

Il mattino dopo, quando mi alzai Rudolph era ancora seduto sul pavimento con gli occhi chiusi.

That afternoon, Jenny took me to meet the other people in the group, and that night I began playing my harmonica with them at the Hodaddy Club.

Quel pomeriggio Jenny mi ha portato a incontrare le altre persone del gruppo e quella sera ho iniziato a suonare la mia armonica con loro all'Hodaddy Club.

It went well, and I played  with them every night.

È andata bene e ho suonato con loro ogni sera.

Then one day I came back to the flat and Jenny was sitting on the floor.

Poi un giorno sono tornato nell'appartamento e Jenny era seduta sul pavimento.

‘Where’s Rudolph?’ I asked.

"Dov'è Rudolph?" Chiesi.

‘Gone,’ she said. ‘Walked out, like all the others.’ And then she started to cry.

"Andato" disse lei. "Andato, come tutti gli altri." E poi ha iniziato a piangere.

 ‘Don’t cry, Jenny,’ I said. And I put my arm round her.

"Non piangere, Jenny" dissi. E l'ho abbracciata.

Well, it started like that. But the next minute we were kissing and making love! And when we finished, Jenny said, ‘Forrest, where have you been all this time?’

Bene, è iniziato così. Ma il minuto dopo ci stavamo baciando e facendo l'amore! E quando finimmo, Jenny disse: "Forrest, dove sei stato per tutto questo tempo?"
