FORREST GUMP - Chapter 2

Chapter 2 Life at University

When we got to the university, Coach Bryant came to talk to us. ‘Last man to get to the practice field will get a ride there on my shoe!’ he shouted at us. And he meant it when he said that kind of thing. We soon learned that.

Quando siamo arrivati all'università, l’allenatore Bryant è venuto a parlare con noi. «L'ultimo uomo che arriva al campo di pratica si farà un giro con la mia scarpa!» Ci gridò. E cosa intendesse quando ha detto quel genere di cose, lo abbiamo imparato presto.

The building that I  went  to  live in was nice on the outside but  not on the inside. Most of the doors and windows were broken, and the floor was dirty. L'edificio in cui sono andato a vivere era bello all'esterno ma non all'interno. La maggior parte delle porte e delle finestre era rotte e il pavimento era sporco.

I lived in a room with a man called Curtis. He crashed into the room with a wild look in his eyes. He wasn’t very  tall, but he was very strong. ‘Where are you from?’ he asked.

Vivevo in una stanza con un uomo di nome Curtis. Irruppe nella stanza con uno sguardo selvaggio negli occhi. Non era molto alto, ma era molto forte. «Da dove vieni?» Chiese.

‘Mobile,’ I told him.

"Mobile", gli dissi.

‘That’s a stupid town!’ he said.

"È una città stupida!" Disse.

And that was all of our conversation for several days.

E quella fu tutta la nostra conversazione per diversi giorni.

On the practice field, things didn’t start very well. I got the ball, but I ran the wrong way with it, and everybody  got  angry  and  started shouting at me.

Sul campo pratica le cose non sono iniziate molto bene. Ho preso la palla, ma ho corso in modo sbagliato e tutti si sono arrabbiati e hanno cominciato a urlarmi contro.

But Coach Bryant called me across. ‘Just get in the line and start catching the ball,’ he told me.

Ma l’allenatore Bryant mi ha chiamato dall'altra parte. "Entra in linea e inizia a prendere la palla", mi ha detto.

And then I told him something that he didn’t want to hear.

E poi gli ho detto qualcosa che non voleva sentire.

‘They never taught me to catch a ball at high school,’ I said. ‘It  was difficult enough for me just to remember where our goal line was.’

"Non mi hanno mai insegnato a prendere una palla alle superiori", dissi. 'È  stato abbastanza difficile per me solo ricordare dove era la nostra linea di porta”.

I don’t think he was very pleased. But he started to teach me to catch.

Non penso che fosse molto contento. Ma ha iniziato a insegnarmi a prendere la palla.

I wanted my Mom, and I wanted to go home. I didn’t like that place.

Volevo mia mamma e volevo andare a casa. Non mi piaceva quel posto.

And Curtis was always angry, and I couldn’t understand him. He had a car, and sometimes he gave me a ride to the practice field. But one day when he had to change a wheel on the car, I helped him.

E Curtis era sempre arrabbiato e non riuscivo a capirlo. Aveva una macchina, e qualche volta mi dava un passaggio per il campo pratica. Ma un giorno, quando ha dovuto cambiare una ruota sulla macchina, l'ho aiutato.

‘If you’re an idiot,’ he said, angrily, ‘how do you know how to do that?’

"Se sei un idiota," disse, arrabbiato, "come fai a saperlo fare?"

‘Maybe I am an idiot,’ I said, ‘but I’m not stupid.’

"Forse sono un idiota," dissi, "ma non sono stupido."

Then Curtis ran after me, and called me all kinds of terrible  names. After that, I moved my bed to another room.

Poi Curtis mi rincorse e mi chiamò  con tutti i tipi di nomi terribili. Dopo ciò, andai a dormire in un'altra stanza.

The first football game was on Saturday. I ran well, and we won 35   to 3. Everybody was pleased with me. I phoned Mom to tell her.

La prima partita di calcio è stata sabato. Ho corso bene e abbiamo vinto 35 a 3. Tutti erano contenti di me. Ho telefonato alla mamma per dirglielo.

‘I heard the game on the radio!’ she said. ‘I was so happy,  I wanted to cry!’

"Ho sentito la partita alla radio!" Disse. “Ero così felice, volevo piangere!”

That night, everybody went to parties, but nobody asked me to   go.

Quella notte, tutti parteciparono ai festeggiamenti, ma nessuno mi chiese di andarci.

I went back to my room, but I heard music from somewhere upstairs.

Tornai nella mia stanza, ma sentii la musica da qualche parte al piano di sopra.

I found a young man who was sitting in his  room playing  the harmonica.

Trovai un giovane che era seduto nella sua stanza a suonare l'armonica.

His name was Bubba. He broke his foot in football practice and couldn’t play in the game.

Il suo nome era Bubba. Si era rotto un piede in allenamento e non aveva potuto giocare la partita.

I sat and listened to him. We didn’t talk, but after about an hour, I asked, ‘Can I try it?’ and he said ‘OK’, and gave me the harmonica. I began to play.

Mi sono seduto e l'ho ascoltato. Non abbiamo parlato, ma dopo circa un'ora, ho chiesto “Posso provarla?” Ha detto “OK” e mi ha dato l'armonica. Ho iniziato a suonare.

After several minutes, Bubba was getting really excited and saying, ‘Good, good, good!’ Then he asked, ‘Where  did  you  learn  to play like that?’

Dopo diversi minuti Bubba ha detto "Bene, bene, bene!" Poi ha chiesto "Dove hai imparato a suonare così?"

‘I didn’t learn anywhere,’ I said.

"Non ho imparato da nessuna parte" Ho detto.

When it got late, he told me to take the harmonica with me, and I played it for a long time in my room.

Quando si è fatto tardi, mi ha detto di portare l'armonica con me, e l'ho suonata a lungo nella mia stanza.

Next day I took it back to Bubba.

Il giorno seguente l'ho riportata a Bubba.

‘Keep it,’ he said. ‘I’ve got another one.’

“Conservala”, disse. "Ne ho un’altra”.

I was really happy, and I went and sat under a tree and played all day.

Ero davvero felice, e sono andato a sedermi sotto un albero e ho suonato tutto il giorno.

It was late afternoon when I began to walk back to my room. Suddenly, I heard a voice shout, ‘Forrest!’ I turned round ─ and saw Jenny!

Era il tardo pomeriggio quando mi sono alzato per tornare nella mia stanza. All'improvviso sentii una voce gridare: "Forrest!" Mi voltai ─ e vidi Jenny!

She had a big smile on her face, and she held my hand.

Aveva un sorriso smagliante sul viso e mi teneva la mano.

‘I saw you play football yesterday,’ she said. ‘You were wonderful!’

"Ti ho visto giocare a football ieri," ha detto. “Sei stato meraviglioso!”

She wasn’t angry about the cinema, and she asked me to have a drink with her!

Non era arrabbiata per il cinema e mi ha chiesto di bere qualcosa con lei!

‘I’m taking lessons in music, and I want to be a singer,’ she told me. ‘I play in a little group. We’re playing at the Students’ Centre tomorrow night. Why don’t you come and listen?’

"Sto prendendo lezioni di musica e voglio diventare un cantante", mi ha detto. “Io suono in un piccolo gruppo. Domani suoneremo al Centro Studenti. Perché non vieni ad ascoltare?”

 ‘OK,’ I said.

"OK" ho detto.
