AT EIGHT IN THE EVENING OF SHROVE TUESDAY...

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent, a period devoted to fasting and penitence in the Christian religion.

Saxon countries it was customary to end this day preparing delicious pancakes with butter and eggs that were in the house.

But the British did not just eat pancakes at Carnival.

They also used the pancake to predict the future. Depending on what you found in pancakes that touched you in luck, you could hazard a few predictions for the twelve months ahead.

It is a superstition, of course ....
È una superstizione, naturalmente...

They made a pancake with the standard ingredients (flour, eggs, butter) and added 1 button, 1 penny, 1 shilling, 1 ring, 1 small piece of wood, 1 small piece of string, 1 small nail

After shuffling, they poured the mixture gradually to the pan and fry a pancake then another and so forth.

Everyone takes a pancake.
Ognuno prendeva una frittella.

Who found a button in the pancake was destined to remain single

Who found a penny was destined to remain poor. What could you buy with a penny?
Chi trovava un penny era destinato a restare povero. Cosa si poteva comprare con un penny?

Who found a shilling was destined to get rich.
Chi trovava uno scellino era destinato ad arricchirsi.

Who found the ring he was destined for an impending marriage.
Chi trovava l'anello era destinato a un imminente matrimonio.

Piece of wood in the pancake could have different interpretations: "to make a home" or "do the carpenter".

Piece of string represented the fishermen's net. Who found the string was destined to travel

The nail hidden in the pancake, represents the nails that hold a horseshoe. This indicated therefore personal success, career, wealth, just as they did to the nobles who had the privilege to travel on horses well shod.

There was another tradition linked to pancakes and these divination techniques. The legend assures those who eat these pancakes prepared with this recipe, at eight in the evening of Shrove Tuesday, will never suffer more hunger.

In fact, if you start dine with a pancake filled with nails and strings in it, it is very likely that not only you will not suffer more hunger, but you stop suffer forever.

But this, perhaps, is another story.
Ma questa, forse, è un’altra storia.

World's Most Crooked Road
La strada più storta del mondo

Lombard Street is the most crooked road in the world and is in San Francisco. This strange street is only part of the long Lombard Street . It only measures a quarter or a mile long.  The speed limit is only five mph and you can only drive one way in the downward direction.
It was built because vehicles could not cope with the 27% gradient so it was suggested that switchbacks of hair pin bends were built thereby making the descent more manageable.
Note: most people unfamiliar with San Francisco believe that Lombard Street is the most crooked street, but it's not. It's just better known, prettier, and part of a wealthier neighborhood. Vermont Street in San Francisco's Portrero Hill district is actually the most crooked.
