LA GIOVINEZZA poesia di Samuel Ullman

Youth is not a time of life - it is a state of mind, it is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over love of ease.

La giovinezza non è un periodo della vita - è uno stato della mente, si tratta di una forma della volontà, una disposizione dell'immaginazione, un vigore delle emozioni (una forza emotiva), una predominanza del coraggio sulla timidezza, della sete di avventura sull'amore per le comodità.

Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair - these are the long, long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.

Nessuno invecchia semplicemente vivendo un certo numero di anni. Le persone invecchiano solo abbandonando i loro ideali. Gli anni tracciano le rughe sulla pelle, ma la rinuncia all’entusiasmo le traccia sull’anima. Preoccupazione, dubbio, mancanza di fiducia in se stessi paura e disperazione - questi sono lunghi lunghi anni che fanno chinare la testa e conducono lo spirito alla morte.

Whether they are sixteen or seventy, there is in every being's heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement at the stars and star like things and thoughts, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing childlike appetite for what is to come next, and the joy and the game of life.

Che si abbia sedici anni o settanta, c'è nel cuore di ogni essere l'amore del meraviglioso, il dolce stupore per le cose sfavillanti e i pensieri luminosi, la sfida intrepida agli eventi, il desiderio insaziabile e infantile per quello che verrà dopo, il senso del lato piacevole e lieto dell’esistenza.

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your despair. When the wires are all down and all the innermost core of your heart is covered with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then you are grown old indeed.

Voi siete giovani come la vostra fede, vecchi come il vostro dubbio; giovani come la vostra fiducia in voi stessi, vecchi come il vostro timore, giovani come la vostra speranza, vecchi come la vostra disperazione. Quando le fibre si sono tutte spezzate e tutto il nucleo più interno del vostro cuore è coperto con le nevi del pessimismo e il ghiaccio del cinismo, allora siete invecchiati davvero.

But so long as your heart receives messages of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeur and power from the earth, from man and from the Infinite, so long you are young.
