FORREST GUMP - Chapter 8

Chapter 8 Into Space

Spring and summer went by, and I continued to play my harmonica with the group. It was my happiest time of all. But ─ you’ve guessed  it ─ something went wrong.

Passarono la primavera e l'estate, e continuai a suonare la mia armonica con il gruppo. È stato il mio periodo più felice di tutti. Ma ─ l'hai indovinato ─ qualcosa andò storto.

How did it happen? I don’t know. But one night I was sitting outside the Hodaddy Club, smoking a cigarette, when a girl smiled and came up to me.

Com'è successo? Non lo so. Ma una notte ero seduto fuori dall'Hodaddy Club, fumando una sigaretta, quando una ragazza sorrise e mi si avvicinò.

She sat down across my legs and put her arms round me. She was laughing and kissing me, and I didn’t know what to do.

Si sedette sulle mie gambe e mi abbracciò. Stava ridendo e baciandomi, e non sapevo cosa fare.

Suddenly, the door opened behind me, and there was Jenny. ‘Forrest, it’s time to’

All'improvviso, la porta si aprì dietro di me, e c'era Jenny. 'Forrest, è tempo di…"

She stopped when she saw me with the girl. Then she said, ‘Oh, no! Not you, too!’

Si fermò quando mi vide con la ragazza. Poi disse: "Oh, no! Non anche tu!'

I jumped up and pushed the girl away. ‘Jenny!’ I said.

Sono saltato su e ho allontanato la ragazza. "Jenny!" Ho detto.

‘Stay away from me, Forrest!’ she said. ‘You men are all the same! Just stay away from me!’

"Stai lontano da me, Forrest!" Disse lei. "Voi uomini siete tutti uguali! Stai lontano da me!"

She didn’t speak to me again that night. And the next morning   she told me to find another place to live.

Non mi ha più parlato quella notte. E la mattina dopo mi ha detto di trovare un altro posto in cui vivere.

I went to live with Moses, one of the other men in the group, and soon after that Jenny went to Washington to talk and work against   the war.

Andai a vivere con Moses, uno degli altri uomini del gruppo, e poco dopo Jenny andò a Washington per parlare e lavorare contro la guerra.

Moses wrote down the address for me.

Moses mi ha scritto l'indirizzo.

So I went back to Washington.

Quindi sono tornato a Washington.

There was a lot of trouble there. Police were everywhere, and people were shouting and throwing things.

C'erano molti problemi lì. La polizia era ovunque e le persone gridavano e lanciavano cose.

And the police were taking some of them away.

E la polizia stava portando via alcune di loro.

I went to find Jenny’s address, but there was nobody at home. I waited outside for most of the day. Then, at about nine o’clock, a car stopped near the house and some people got out. And there she was!

Sono andato all'indirizzo di Jenny, ma non c'era nessuno in casa. Ho aspettato fuori per gran parte della giornata. Poi, verso le nove, una macchina si è fermata vicino alla casa e alcune persone sono scese. Ed eccola lì!

I started to walk towards her, but she turned and walked away.  The other people ─ two men and a girl ─ didn’t know what to say.

Ho iniziato a camminare verso di lei, ma lei si è girata e si è allontanata. Le altre persone - due uomini e una ragazza - non sapevano cosa dire.

‘What’s wrong with her?’ I asked one of the two men.

"Cosa c'è che non va in lei?" Chiesi a uno dei due uomini.

‘She just got out of prison,’ he said. ‘She was there all  night before we could get her out.’

"È appena uscita di prigione", disse. "È stata lì tutta la notte prima che potessimo tirarla fuori."

Jenny was in the back of the car, so I went over and talked to her through the window.

Jenny era sul sedile posteriore dell'auto, quindi andai a parlarle attraverso il finestrino.

I told her how I felt ─ I was sorry about the girl, and I didn’t want to play in the group without her. She listened quietly, then opened the car door for me to get in, and we    sat and talked.

Le ho detto come mi sentivo ─ Mi dispiaceva per la ragazza, e non volevo suonare nel gruppo senza di lei. Ascoltò piano, poi aprì la portiera dell'auto per farmi entrare e ci sedemmo e parlammo.

The others were talking about something that would happen the next day. Some American soldiers planned to take off their Vietnam medals and throw them away in front of the crowds of people. Suddenly Jenny said, ‘Did you know that Forrest won a medal?’

Gli altri stavano parlando di qualcosa che sarebbe accaduto il giorno dopo. Alcuni soldati americani avevano pianificato di togliersi le medaglie ricevute in Vietnam e gettarle via di fronte alla folla di persone. All'improvviso Jenny disse: "Sapevate che Forrest ha vinto una medaglia?"

The others went quiet and looked at me, then looked at Jenny.

Gli altri si zittirono e mi guardarono, poi guardarono Jenny.

Next morning, Jenny came into the living-room. I was sleeping on   the floor of their house. She woke me up.

La mattina dopo, Jenny entrò nel soggiorno. Stavo dormendo sul pavimento della loro casa. Mi svegliò.

‘Forrest,’ she said. ‘I want you to do something for me.’

"Forrest," disse lei. "Voglio che tu faccia qualcosa per me.

‘What?’ I said.

"Cosa?" Dissi.

'I want you to come with us today, and I want you to wear your army clothes.’

"Voglio che tu venga con noi oggi, e voglio che tu indossi i tuoi vestiti dell'esercito."

‘Why?’ I asked.

"Perché?" Ho chiesto.

‘Because you’re going to do something to stop all the killing in Vietnam.’

"Perché stai per fare qualcosa per fermare tutte le uccisioni in Vietnam."

You can guess what I had to do, can’t you? I had to throw away  my medal with the other American soldiers. But because my medal was a more famous medal than theirs, it was more  important  to  Jenny and her friends.

Puoi indovinare cosa dovevo fare, vero? Dovevo buttare via la mia medaglia con gli altri soldati americani. Ma poiché la mia medaglia era una medaglia di maggior valore della loro, era più importante per Jenny e i suoi amici.

Oh, I threw my medal away, OK ─ but it hit somebody really important! One of the President’s men! So they threw me into prison.

Oh, ho buttato via la medaglia, OK ─ ma ha colpito qualcuno davvero importante! Uno degli uomini del presidente! Così mi hanno messo in prigione.

Why do things like that always happen to me?

Perché cose del genere succedono sempre a me?

I didn’t stay in prison long, because they soon real- ized that I was an idiot, and they put me in a special hospital for idiots.

Non sono rimasto in prigione a lungo, perché presto si sono resi conto che ero un idiota e mi hanno messo in un ospedale speciale per idioti.

It was the doctors at the hospital who decided  to  send  me  to  NASA ─ that’s the space centre at Houston, in Texas.

Sono stati i medici dell'ospedale che hanno deciso di mandarmi alla NASA ─ questo è il centro spaziale di Houston in Texas.

‘You’re just the kind of person that they’re looking for!’ the doctors told me.

"Sei il tipo giusto di persona che stanno cercando!" Mi dissero i dottori.

I soon understood why! NASA sent me on a journey into space with an ape! Me, a spaceman!

Ho capito presto perché! La NASA mi ha mandato in un viaggio nello spazio con uno scimmione! Io, un astronauta!

All kinds of things went wrong because of that ape. Instead of coming down in the sea when we returned, the space ship came down in the jungle somewhere, and it was four years before the NASA people found us!

Tutte le cose sono andate male a causa di quella scimmia. Invece di scendere in mare, quando siamo tornati, la nave spaziale è scesa da qualche parte nella giungla e sono passati quattro anni prima che la NASA ci trovasse!

But the ape and I were soon good friends.  His name was Sue (yes, I know it’s a girl’s name, but they sent a male ape up by mistake, and NASA didn’t like to tell the news- papers that). And it was in the jungle that I met Big Sam ─ a man who taught me to  play chess. And that was important, as you will see later.

Ma io e la scimmia siamo diventati presto buoni amici. Il suo nome era Sue (sì, so che è il nome di una ragazza, ma hanno mandato uno scimmione maschio per sbaglio, e alla NASA non piaceva farlo sapere ai giornali). Ed è stato nella giungla che ho incontrato Big Sam - un uomo che mi ha insegnato a giocare a scacchi. E quello fu importante, come vedrai in seguito.
