HALLOWEEN SEASON

Gourd-like orange fruits inscribed with ghoulish faces and illuminated by candles are a sure sign of the Halloween season.

Frutti arancioni simili a arance incisi con facce macabre e illuminati da candele sono un sicuro segno della stagione di Halloween.

Many hundreds of years ago, a population called the Celts lived in Europe and on the British Isles.

Molte centinaia di anni fa, una popolazione chiamata Celti viveva in Europa e nelle Isole Britanniche.

The Celts believed that the souls of the dead visited Earth on the last day of October, so they held a celebration in their honour and they called it Samhain (pronounced sa-win) which began from sunset of 31st October to sunset on the 1st November and indicated the end of summer and the beginning of coldness and darkness. Big fires were lit in honour of the sun and its return after winter.

I Celti credevano che le anime dei morti visitassero la Terra l’ultimo giorno di ottobre, così tenevano una festa in loro onore e la chiamavano Samhain (pronunciato sa-win) che iniziava dal tramonto del 31 ottobre fino al tramonto dell’ 1 novembre e indicava la fine dell’estate e l’inizio del freddo e dell’oscurità. Grandi fuochi erano accesi in onore del sole e del suo ritorno dopo l’inverno.

When the Romans conquered the Celts, they too began to celebrate Samahin. 

Quando i Romani conquistarono i Celti, anche loro iniziarono a festeggiare lo Samhain.

So the belief that the souls of the dead visited Earth on the last day of October spread and still survives and it is commonly called Halloween.

Così la credenza che le anime dei morti visitassero la Terra l’ultimo giorno di ottobre, si diffuse e ancora sopravvive ed è comunemente chiamata Halloween.

The legend of Jack O'Lantern goes back hundreds of years in Irish History. Jack as a man grew up in a small village, and he was known for his stinginess and laziness.

La leggenda di Jack O’Lantern risale nella storia irlandese a centinaia di anni fa. Jack era un uomo cresciuto in un piccolo villaggio ed era conosciuto per la sua avarizia e la sua pigrizia.

Stingy Jack, as he was called, liked to play tricks on everyone and one day he even tricked the Devil.

A Jack l’avaro, così era chiamato, piaceva giocare scherzi a tutti e un giorno si prese gioco persino del Diavolo.

Once Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him at a pub. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn’t want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks.

Una volta Stingy Jack invitò il Diavolo a bere qualcosa con lui in un pub. Fedele al suo nome, Stingy Jack non voleva pagare per la sua consumazione, così convinse il Diavolo a trasformarsi in una moneta che Jack poteva usare per pagare le loro bevande.

So the Devil took the shape of a coin and Jack put it into his wallet next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.

Così il diavolo prese la forma di una moneta e Jack lo mise nel suo portafoglio accanto a una croce d'argento, che impediva al diavolo di tornare alla sua forma originale.

Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul.

Alla fine Jack liberò il diavolo, a condizione che non gli avesse dato fastidio  per un anno e che, se Jack fosse morto, non avrebbe reclamato la sua anima.

The following year the Devil reappeared and asked Jack to accompany him, but Jack again tricked the Devil.

L'anno seguente il diavolo riapparve e chiese a Jack di accompagnarlo, ma Jack di nuovo ingannò il diavolo.

Jack persuaded the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit.

Jack convinse il diavolo a salire su un albero per raccogliere un frutto.

While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.

Mentre si trovava sull'albero, Jack incise un segno della croce sulla corteccia dell'albero in modo che il Diavolo non potesse scendere finché non gli avesse promesso di non infastidirlo per altri dieci anni.

Years later, when Jack died, he went up to the gates of Heaven, but Saint Peter told Jack he couldn’t enter because he had been so stingy and miserable in life.

Anni dopo, quando Jack morì, salì ai cancelli del Paradiso, ma San Pietro gli disse  che non poteva entrare perché nella sua vita era stato troppo avaro e miserabile.

Jack then went down to Hell. But the Devil kept his promise and wouldn’t let him in. 

Allora Jack andò giù all’Inferno. Ma il Diavolo mantenne la sua promessa e non lo fece entrare.

Jack was so scared as he had nowhere to go. And wandering around in the darkness he asked the Devil for help.

Jack era così spaventato perché non aveva nessun posto dove andare. E vagando nell’oscurità chiese aiuto al Diavolo.

The Devil gave him a burning coal from the flames of Hell to light his way.

Il Diavolo gli diede un carbone ardente dalle fiamme dell’Inferno per illuminare la sua via.

Jack placed this piece of coal in a hollow Turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since.

Jack mise questo pezzo di carbone in una rapa svuotata e da allora continua a vagare per la Terra.

This is the story that was told by the Irish people who arrived in America in the 1800s. They carved their turnips into Jack O’lanterns to remind them what happened to people who were stingy. Today Americans carve ‘Jack O’lanterns’ from pumpkins being much easier to find in autumn than turnips. 

Questa è la storia che veniva raccontata dagli irlandesi che arrivarono in America nel 1800. Intagliavano le loro rape in Jack O’lanterns per ricordare che cosa succedeva alle persone avare. Oggi gli americani intagliano le "Jack O’lanterns" dalle zucche che in autunno sono più facili da trovare delle rape.
