LUCKY NUMBERS

From the first day that man began to study numbers and their significance in everyday life, some numbers have been assigned certain characteristics. Some numbers have been thought to be lucky, while others are considered unlucky. And it’s not just Western culture that has done this. Cultures in Japan, China, India and Africa have done the exact same thing, but for different reasons.

Dal primo giorno in cui l'uomo ha iniziato a studiare i numeri e la loro importanza nella vita di tutti i giorni, ad alcuni numeri sono state assegnate determinate caratteristiche. Alcuni numeri sono stati pensati per essere fortunati, mentre altri sono considerati sfortunati. E non è solo la cultura occidentale che ha fatto questo. Le culture in Giappone, Cina, India e Africa hanno fatto esattamente la stessa cosa, ma per ragioni diverse.

THE NUMBER 2 is a very lucky number in Asia because it is believed that good things happen in pairs". The number 2 is used in advertising as a phrase that means "double the happiness" or "double the effectiveness". In Cantonese, the pronunciation of the number 2 is similar to the world "easy".

Il numero 2 è un numero molto fortunato in Asia, perché si ritiene che le cose buone accadono a coppie. Il numero 2 è utilizzato nella pubblicità come una frase che significa 'il doppio della felicità' o "doppia efficacia". In Cantonese, la pronuncia del numero 2 è simile alla parola "facile". 

THE NUMBER 3 - A lucky number in many Western cultures is the number 3 because there is a popular quote that says “All good things must come in three”. Also, the number 3 is lucky because a triangle, thought to be an indestructible shape, has 3 sides and the number 3 is also a biblical representation of the trinity.

Un numero fortunato in molte culture occidentali è il numero 3 perché c'è una citazione popolare che dice le cose buone vengono  tre alla volta. Inoltre il numero 3 è fortunato perché un triangolo, che si pensa essere una forma indistruttibile, ha 3 lati e il numero 3 è anche una rappresentazione biblica della trinità.

THE NUMBER 5 - The number 5 is significant in many different religions. In Judaism, the book of Psalms is made up of 5 different books and the Torah contains the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, also known as the Five Books of Moses. In addition, the Khamsa, a symbol that is shaped like a 5 fingered hand, is a symbol of protection in both Jewish and Arabic culture. There are 5 basic pillars of Islam and Muslims pray 5 times a day to Allah. The ancient Greeks also believed the number 5 was significant because they thought the universe was made of 5 different elements – ether, fire, air, water and earth. Finally, the Japanese believe that the number 5 is important because there are 5 planets that can be seen from Earth with the naked eye.

Il numero 5 è significativo in molte religioni differenti. Nel giudaismo, il libro dei Salmi è costituito da 5 diversi libri e la Torah contiene i libri della Genesi, Esodo, Levitico, Numeri e Deuteronomio, noti anche come i cinque libri di Mosè. Inoltre, la Khamsa, un simbolo che ha la forma di una mano con 5 dita, è un simbolo di protezione, nella cultura ebraica e araba. Ci sono i 5 pilastri dell'Islam e i musulmani pregano 5 volte al giorno Allah. Anche gli antichi Greci credevano che il numero 5 fosse significativo perché pensavano l'universo fosse composto da 5 elementi diversi: etere, fuoco, aria, acqua e terra. Infine, i giapponesi credono che il numero 5 sia importante perché ci sono 5 pianeti che possono essere visti dalla Terra a occhio nudo.

THE NUMBER 7 - One of the lucky numbers in Western culture is the number 7. This number is considered lucky for several different reasons. First, in Christianity, God is believed to have created the universe in 7 days. The number 7 is also considered to be lucky because until the 17th century, there were 7 known planets. Pythagoras, the famous mathematician, also thought the number 7 was lucky. The number 7 is also the best number that a player can roll when playing craps. Finally, many ladybugs have exactly 7 spots and ladybugs are thought to be lucky insects.

Uno dei numeri fortunati nella cultura occidentale è il numero 7. Questo numero è considerato fortunato per diversi motivi. In primo luogo, nel cristianesimo, Dio si crede abbia creato l'universo in 7 giorni. Il numero 7 è anche considerato fortunato perché fino al 17° secolo, c'erano 7 pianeti conosciuti. Anche Pitagora, il famoso matematico, pensava che il numero 7 fosse fortunato. Infine molte coccinelle hanno esattamente 7 puntini neri e le coccinelle sono considerate insetti portafortuna. 

THE NUMBER 8 - The number 8 is considered lucky in China, Japan, Vietnam, or any countries with a Chinese or Japanese influence, because the pronunciation sounds like the phrase "good luck". Recently, a news article reported that the telephone number 8888-8888 was sold for more than $200,000.

Il numero 8 è considerato fortunato in Cina, Giappone, Vietnam o nelle zone di influenza  cinese o giapponese perché la pronuncia suona come la frase "buona fortuna". Recentemente, un articolo di giornale ha riferito che il numero di telefono 8888-8888 è stato venduto per più di 200.000 dollari. 

THE NUMBER 9 - In China the number 9 was associated with emperors and matters connected with emperors. In Norway, the number 9 was considered sacred according to Norse mythology.

In Cina il numero 9 era associato agli imperatori e alle questioni connesse con imperatori. In Norvegia, il numero 9 era considerato sacro secondo la mitologia norrena.

THE NUMBER 13 - The number 13 represent St.Anthony in Italy, consider to the patron saint of finding things or lost people.

In Italia il numero 13 è associato a S. Antonio, considerato il santo patrono che fa ritrovare cose o persone perdute.

THE NUMBER 15 - This number often consider to be lucky in Spanish-speaking countries (cannot find a reason why though)

Questo numero è spesso considerato fortunato nei paesi di lingua spagnola (ma non si sa il perché).

THE NUMBER 666 - Six hundred and sixty-six is an interesting number. In cultures in Asia, the pronunciation of 666 sounds very much like the phrase, “things going smoothly,” and it is considered to be very lucky. Many shopkeepers will place a sign or plaque with 666 written or carved on it in their window as a good luck charm. The same goes for the front door of a home or apartment.

Seicentosessantasei è un numero interessante. Nelle culture in Asia, la pronuncia di 666 suona come la frase, "le cose che vanno senza intoppi", ed è considerato molto fortunato. Molti negozianti espongono nella loro vetrina un cartello o una targa con scritto o scolpito 666, come un portafortuna. Lo stesso vale per la porta d'ingresso di una casa o di un appartamento.
